Glazed Ceramics

Glazed ceramics are made of a clay that has a top coat fired on to create a glossy appearance and increase the durability of highly used items.

Characteristics & Source

  • Can be used for function or aesthetic

  • Color depends on temperature, chemistry of glaze, and composition of color

  • Used to color, decorate, or waterproof item

  • Allows earthenware to hold liquids and become non-porous

  • Glossy appearance

  • Creates tough surface

  • Can withstand extreme changes in temperature

Production & Maintenance

  • Impervious layer of a vitreous substance that is fired on

  • Typically use gentle cleaning supplies, check on how to clean depending on the item

  • Silica is used because it is a glass former

  • Dry-dust mixture on surface of clay

  • Fire in kiln at extremely high temperatures

Environmental Impact

  • Glaze is not harmful to indoor air quality if made without lead

  • Kilns use a lot of energy which comes from fossil fuels

  • Heat recovery systems manage and distribute the heat to communities, buildings, and tunnels to be reused making it sustainable

  • Long life-cycle

Application

  • Add impervious barrier to become non-porous ​

  • Glazed on surface face

  • Install using a sanded grout

  • Bullnose trim on edge if flowing into another floor material
