Doors & Partitions

Glass is commonly used in interiors to serve as doors, partitions and walls, or framed into doors. Different types of glass are used for these applications such as glazed, sheet, glass block, tempered, wired, and more.

Application

One of the common uses of glass doors is in the shower. This provides a sleek, easy to clean surface that also adds a timeless look. Different types of glass used for this application are:​

  • Clear glass

  • Textured glass

  • Acid etched glass

  • Tempered glass (this is the safest option)

  • Tinted glass

  • Starphire glass

  • Low-iron glass

  • Frosted glass

  • Rain glass

Standards: 

  1. Building Code Requirement IRC P 2708.1 (2000 edition) states that all hinged shower doors must open outwards

  2. The door will need to be a minimum of 22" wide and no more than 36" wide

  3. ASTM C1349 - 17 - Standard Specification for Architectural Flat Glass Clad Polycarbonate

  4. ASTM C1256 - 93(2019) Standard Practice for Interpreting Glass Fracture Surface Features

  5. Hose Stream Test: All glass rated for 45 minutes or more must undergo a fire hose stream test to determine that the glass can withstand the shock of both heat from a fire and water from sprinklers or a fire hose

  6. NFPA 257 Standard for Fire Tests of Window and Glass Block
