Plastic Laminate

Plastic laminate is a durable, thermoset plastic. It is categorized into two types of laminate: high pressure laminate and low pressure laminate. It can be used for numerous applications such as countertops and backsplashes, furniture, flooring, wall coverings, cabinets, paneling, and signage.

Application

Although plastic laminate can be applied to many surfaces, it is commonly used for flooring.

  • Plastic laminate can imitate wood and other materials

  • It consists of four layers:

    • Backing layer

    • Core of a composite wood product that often has melamine particles added for moisture protection

    • Photographic paper layer

    • Wear layer of melamine aluminum oxide resin

  • The layers are cured under high heat and pressure

  • They can have a satin or textured finish and are constructed in a sheet and cut into individual planks

  • The planks have tongue and groove edges that snap together to create a floating floor

  • Durable and relatively inexpensive but can de-laminate when exposed to water

  • Maintain by vacuuming with a soft brush attachment. Light spray and a microfiber rag can be used to remove dirt
