Oil-Based Paint

Oil-based paint is a popularly used for glazes as it takes a longer period to dry, which allows for corrections of blemishes; however, it is not very environmentally friendly.

Characteristics & Source

  • Originally used for fine art purposes in Afghanistan 

  • Used as a glaze (pigment and oil can add a tint to an image)

  • Adds luminosity to paintings​

  • Liquid drier can be used to speed the drying process

  • Known for gloss but can have a matte finish

  • Durable

  • Also known as enamel paints

  • Repels water

  • Flammable

  • Can be applied to a variety of surfaces

Production & Maintenance

  • Dry powder pigments mixed with linseed oil to create a paste consistency

  • Vanish added after to prevent from abrasions and dirt

  • Use primer on dry wall before

  • Can crack if the upper layers dry before the lower layers (less pigment and more oil with each layer)

  • Can take weeks to dry, allowing corrections to be made afterwards by blending (siccative: dries by absorbing oxygen)

  • Use detergent, warm water, and vinegar to clean walls

Environmental Impact

  • Long life-cycle

  • Difficult to recycle

  • Toxic to indoor air quality during the drying process as it contains VOCs (very important to 

  • Requires 50% more energy to produce

  • Time consuming

  • Apply primer to dry wall

  • Create a smooth, buttery paste of pigment and oil

  • Apply layers as desired appearance (fix blemishes)

  • Apply varnish as a spot resistant coating
