Terracotta

Terracotta tiles are naturally porous, clay tiles. They are sometimes called Saltillo or baked earth because of their natural orange-brown earth tones, and can be glazed or unglazed. Terracotta tiles are most commonly used for floor and wall surfaces.

Application

Terracotta can be used for floor tiles, roof tiles, and wall tile medallions, among other things. It is most commonly used for flooring and wall surfaces.

  • When applying terracotta tiles to flooring, it is best to seal the tiles for durability and cleaning

    • Porous, unsealed tiles can collect dirt, fade away, and make cleaning very difficult

  • Terracotta tiles require a bullnose edge when used for step treads or even swimming pool edges

  • Although flooring should be sealed, terracotta can be natural, unglazed, glazed, burnished, hand-glazed, or painted

Testing

  • ASTM C373 - 18 Standard Test Methods for Determination of Water Absorption and Associated Properties by Vacuum Method for Pressed Ceramic Tiles and Glass Tiles and Boil Method for Extruded Ceramic Tiles and Non-tile Fired Ceramic Whiteware Products
